Launched: Season 4 of The HPS Podcast
The latest season of our ever growing HPS Podcast launched last month, and has already received record downloads.
We recently published our first 2-part episode featuring the wonderful Simon Schaffer discussing the famous HPS publication, Leviathan and the Air-Pump: Hobbes, Boyle and the Experimental Life, which Simon co-wrote with another esteemed HPS scholar, Steven Shapin, in the early 1980s.
Then, in just a few weeks, we have the celebrated historian of science, Naomi Oreskes, and - to finish the season - Editor-in-chief of Science, Holden Thorp.
Find all the great episodes from this season - as well as the previous three - on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, on our website - as well as in all the usual podcast places. If you prefer to read the interviews, we produce transcripts of all our episodes, available on our blog here.
You can also find more news, including some recent additions to our podcast team, on our website here > https://www.hpsunimelb.org/about-the-podcast

Recent Event: Animal Ethics in Conservation Decision Making Workshop
In September Dr Kate Lynch and Prof Fiona Fidler were involved in a workshop on “Animal Ethics in Conservation Decision Making” organised in collaboration with the Melbourne Biodiversity Institute. The event brought together philosophers of science, ecologists and conservation managers from across Australia and internationally.
The two-day intensive involved discussions of how animal welfare can be better integrated into conservation decision making, and how other potential conflicting values in conservation management should be made more explicit. It culminated in a collaborative paper which uses contemporary case studies to illustrate how welfare concerns can conflict and/or complement other concerns in conservation management including cultural values, economic values, biodiversity prioritisation and concerns for human health.
